These pyramids were constructed during the old kingdom of the pharaohs who laid their rule amidst the fertile valley of river Nile. It won’t be misleading to say that these pyramids were the biggest symbol to their strength as they have an architectural dominion which appears most unlikely in those older periods.

The dead pharaohs were believed to be the king of the dead or Osiris as known by the Egyptians. The king who used to come after the earlier one was known Horus, the god of the heavens alon with the protector of the sun god. This cycle of one king succeeding another was shown by the rising and setting of the sun. It was believed by the Egyptians that some bit of the soul of the dead pharaoh still resides in their body. It was the usual belief that if the corpse did not get the needed care then pharaoh will not be capable to perform his duties as the king of the dead. This will lead to the breaking of the cycle and so Egypt will be in peril.

This was the actual reason why every pharaoh was mummified in order to prevent Egypt from any expected disaster. They used to save the body and everything else along with it that they will require in their after- life. Things like gold, furniture, edibles, vessels and also the doll-like models of servants all were provided in the grave. Once the body was preserved, their next step was to shelter and secure the remnants. This was a way to ensure that pharaoh’s soul stays with his corpse. For this reason, the Egyptians used to build massive tombs. The tombs were carved in to bedrock and sometimes mounds of dirt used to top the structures.

These tombs were later made in the form of pyramids. Keeping in view the sacred stone of benben, Egyptian pyramids were modeled. This stone used to show the beam from the sun. Some of the ancient Egyptian text further claimed that these sunbeams were the route through which the pharaohs reached the heaven.

The building of the pyramids engaged many of the labor, for instance, in case of the pyramids of Giza, around 20,000 to 30,000 laborers were needed to erect them in over 80 years. Interestingly, much of the construction happened while the Nile River was flooded which made it easier to float huge blocks of limestone from quarries up to the site of pyramids. Subsequently, they were polished by hands and transported up to the top using ramps. The priests and the laborers who built the pyramids, had faith in the life and death cycle of the pharaohs.
